One of my first ideas when I joined The 51st was to launch the Ask A D.C. Native column, and it’s been a fun ride for the past seven months.
My goal was to position D.C. natives as authorities on the city. Our families have deep roots here; we’ve matriculated through the public school system, started businesses, and contributed to the music, food, and arts scenes that make this such a vibrant city. If you want to know about D.C. — not Washington — who better to ask than one of us?
I’m thrilled to announce that on Monday, May 19 at 6:30 p.m., this column is coming to life! We’re putting D.C. natives to the test at Ask A D.C. Native, Live! — a head-to-head competition hosted by Dwayne Lawson-Brown, where two teams of D.C. natives will answer trivia questions about their hometown in front of a live audience.
Contestants and audience members will win prizes from Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company, Mosaic Theater Company, Eaton DC, Life Alive Organic Cafe, and others.

This is a chance to nerd out on D.C. history and culture, bask in nostalgia, and celebrate District natives. All are welcome — whether you were born in the city or just unpacked your suitcase.
The event is a collaboration between my company, Black.Native.Creative, The 51st, and Eaton House. Special thanks our sponsors Afro News and AVAD, LLC.
