DC government can’t protect us like a blue state that has 10th Amendment protections. Unlike a state, that has default Constitutional powers over legislation, DC is considered a federal territory. Even though we pay more in taxes than 20 other states, we have no representation at the federal level and have limited control over our local politics.
DC can still listen to and support its citizenry. While the government may not have much leverage or legal standing against this regime, they can stand by local values when executing policies, maintain rigorous standards for our city employees and police, and prioritize funding for human-critical services.
We need to show up and speak out so that our government is communicating with us with full transparency. A lot of changes will be coming and we need that information transmitted to us in a way that let’s us know the full picture: not manipulated for politics on the hill, or downplayed to placate us.
