The administration has said over, and over, and over again that DC is not capable of governing itself.
The Administration calls us Crime-Ridden. Filthy. A Disaster.
What he really means is that we’re too Black. Too Brown. Too Democratic. Too diverse. Too independent.
Legislation has been introduced to overturn Home Rule.
The House attached a rider to the budget bill prohibiting us to use money in our FY 2025 budget.
They want to make us bend the knee.
Washington DC is one of the best places in the nation! And we are DC Strong!
What Is DC Home Rule?
Home Rule gives DC:
- An Elected Mayor
- An Elected City Council
- Elected Neighborhood Representatives (ANCs)
Home Rule lets us have a voice over local laws that affect our day-to-day lives and makes the people in charge of those laws accountable to US!
Can Republicans Really Control DC?
YES!!! Congress could revoke home rule. Then Congress would make all of our laws, control all of our tax revenue, and have ZERO accountability to us.
We will have NO voice at the federal OR local level!
But Congress doesn’t have to revoke Home Rule to take power. Neither does the administration. We are all at risk.
How Do We Protect Our Basic Constitutional Rights?
We MUST regain our voice! We must work across wards to protect our neighbors, and focus on protecting Democracy!

What does that look like if THEY take control?
We have no voice over federal legislation that affects us, but with Home Rule we have a voice over essential daily functions: taxes, housing policy, criminal laws, what we teach in our schools, how our schools are funded, rules the police have to follow, health care services, street maintenance, and bigger social values such as ensuring racial and social equity.
Thanks to the DC Home Rule Act We Have:
- Control of DC Metropolitan Police Department
- Control Over Criminal Laws & Sentences
- Office of the DC Attorney General (AG Schwalb)
- Determination of How DC City Budget Is Allocated
- Authority Over Fiscal Policy Affecting DC's Bond Rating
- Control of Building Projects, Such as Stadiums and Parks
- Control Over Property Tax Rates & Minimum Wage
- Control Over Local Health Initiatives & Environmental Damage Reparation

DC is more than just monuments to the past.
We support Americans in all the other states through our taxes, military service, and community service to our nation.
DC is our home, and we deserve a voice over our laws!
How Does Congress Takes Over?
What Does This Mean to DC Citizens?
We don't have to lose Home Rule to lose our voice!
Even without revoking Home Rule, Congress can overrule our legislation, create new legislation for us, or control our spending.
Who said that people we did not vote for and cannot remove – People who have not spoken with, or listened to, DC Citizens -People who have never even left Capitol Hill – get to decide all of OUR laws?
That is not what democracy looks like.
If Congress Ruled DC They Could:
- Privatize our Schools & Decide How Slavery Is Taught
- Forbid All Abortion Care - No Exceptions!
- Reverse DC's Minority Protections and Equal Rights
- Make Bathroom Laws Like in Congress
- Criminalize Cannabis
- Repeal DC Environmental Protections
- Rewrite DC Voting Laws
- Repeal DC Gun Protections

We tell our government leaders that WE have ideas on how we should protect ourselves.
We prepare in advance if bad things should come & we organize to be ready to take to the streets to protect our communities.
Your voice DOES matter! Get involved! Engage in the democratic system! Join your neighbors, get connected, get involved, use your voice. Even if you can’t be on the front lines, stay informed and give feedback about what is happening in your community!
